How to Defend Your Shower Curtain From Mildew

bathroom-and-shower-curtain.jpeg
This post will help save you work.

To keep her plastic shower curtain or liner mildew-free, I had a friend that used to wipe it down immediately after each shower.  The only problem is as soon as you finish, you feel like you need another shower. However, I tried something else that worked much better to defend my plastic shower curtain that I thought you also should try.

Before I hung a new plastic liner, I treated it first in a salt solution in my bathtub according to the directions I learned from one of my friends that visited over the holidays.  What I did was to fill the tub about half way full with water before dumping in two cups of salt and that plastic liner.

You need enough water to fully immerse the shower curtain.  If it keeps popping up, then make sure to weigh it down with something because it has to remain in that treated water for at least an hour before hanging it.  I used some full plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash, which served to anchor it down.

The purpose of bathing your fresh plastic shower curtain or liner first is because the salt solution will leave behind a transparent coating of sodium crystals to repel mildew spores from attaching.

How to Keep Your House Cleaner Longer

cat-peeking-behind-door.jpeg
Here is the shoe guard.

It is unrealistic to think that you can keep all dirt from finding its way into your house.  Yet, there are some steps that you can take to minimize it.

The first place to think about is the door area.  Instead of tracking dirt into the house, a heavy-duty floor mat or rug can help lessen chances of carrying it further into your home.  What we like to do at our house is to take our shoes off at the door and slip them into our slippers that we parked nearby in the entryway.  Try positioning a shoe rack near each entry and instructing the family into changing from their “street” shoes into “house” shoes does keep the house cleaner.

If you want to dust not as often, you need to remember to change your furnace filter monthly and regularly clean your air vents. Air-conditioning filters should be changed every three months.  Also, what helps are having the air ducts professionally cleaned once a year.

Bathrooms are prone to mold.  What I like to do is to make a DIY home cleaning spray of water and white vinegar and store in a plastic spray bottle to wipe things down.  This is better on the lungs than inhaling chemicals like bleach and also good for the environment.  Fill about one fourth of the clean spray bottle with the white vinegar before adding the rest with water.  I boil the water first, let it cool before using it in this recipe.  You could use it straight out of the tap, but this keeps the mixture a bit more sanitary.

How to Freshen Up Your Suede Coat or Jacket in Between a Professional Cleaning

suede-jacket.jpeg
This post can help better maintain your suede jacket or coat.

One of my favorite jackets in college was this heavy suede with a plush fur collar that tied instead of buttoned.  It was so heavy that I named it the “tank” because it protected me through the worst weather.  Despite how frigid the temperatures could be, I felt cozy while waiting for my bus after classes.

My only complaint about the “tank” was how expensive the professional cleaning became each season I retired it. Still, it always came back to its beauty but that cleaning bill did quickly add up in time.  Nonetheless, it was worth it to someone like me that couldn’t hold up in the cold.

If you own a suede jacket and notice a small spot, take a clean, but soft, rubber art gum eraser to it and gently rub.  This helped me remove some small spots in between going to the dry cleaner.

Once I did drop my pen and got some ink on my jacket.  What I did was spray the spot lightly with some hair spray.  Test the hair spray inside the jacket or coat in an inconspicious spot first before trying this directly on the spot.  This way you will know if the material is up to it or not.  After the treated spot dried, I rubbed it with the eraser, which helped.

Perhaps, you haven’t worn your jacket or suede coat for a while and notice it collected some dust and lint from just hanging.  Save a pair of old pantyhose and then crunch them up in your hand to make a ball to rub over the jacket or coat.  Believe it or not, the pantyhose act like a magnet to draw off the dust and lint.

These #suede #cleaning tips that I’m sharing with you can help keep your jacket or coat better maintained and beautiful longer.

Have You Been Considering Self-Storage As an Option to Solve Your Clutter Problem?

boxes-and-dolly.jpeg
Have you weighed the pros and cons of seeking self-storage for your treasures?

Most of us seem to buy more than we need.  This might be great for the economy, but it is not necessarily a good thing for our homes.  Too much of anything presents a problem of clutter if you don’t have enough space to store.  Therefore, you eventually have two options of downsizing some items or storing possessions elsewhere to keep stress levels down.

Of course, no one likes to part with their treasures, especially if they have sentimental value such as your grandmother’s set of china or a sizeable teapot collection from your dearly beloved aunt.  Ask yourself though how often or if you ever you plan to use those things first or just keep them on a shelf or packaged in a box.  After all, grandmothers’ china may be beautifully ornate and a part of your family’s history, but do you trust the glaze to be lead-free to be safe to eat from now? As to your favorite aunt’s teapot collection, you might be admiring them in a china cabinet, perhaps, but ask yourself if you’re really a tea drinker or mostly prefer coffee or soda?  These are the questions that you need to consider when examining your belongings, if you intend to keep your sanity.

My recommendation is to pick and choose items based on their practical use in your life.  Gather what you can’t live without in one section of the room and then place the other items on the opposite side.

The hard part comes next.  From the items you want to keep but don’t really have room for, try to sort out the essentials from the nonessentials but keepsake items.  Some of the nonessentials are ones that aren’t really important to you that may want to donate to charity.  Others are ideal for a garage sale.

Now ask yourself the importance of each nonessential keepsake by hanging onto it.  Is the cost of monthly storage justified or would it be cheaper and more to your benefit to sell it?

Memories are one thing, but they also can be costly for self-storage or looking into buying a larger home. Saving one item from that cherished, departed relative over many may be more practical for your budget and stress reduction.

By now, the pile of items that you’re keeping has decreased.  The items still dear to you that do not fit in your home will need self-storage.  Write down every piece and then start calling self-storage facilities to compare their prices.  Depending on the business and the square footage of space that you’ll need, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $400 per month.  Furthermore, you might even need to have additional  insurance beyond your homeowner’s or rental insurance for theft, water damage, fire, etc.

The price might be within your budget.  Yet, can you afford this monthly fee regularly in the future?

I knew someone that has a passion for collecting cookbooks.  Cookbooks dominated every room of her home, including the garage.  Their cars and boat eventually had to be parked outdoors until moving them to self-storage.  One unit soon became two and a good part of this woman’s monthly salary went toward self-storage of these cookbooks, packed in boxes that were so jammed in these storage units that once inside, rarely saw the light of day.  Yet, what others may consider a money pit was worth it to this particular woman. Can you say the same?

Personally, I think self-storage is better as a temporary solution.  You could be remodeling your home, moving, going through a divorce, etc. that calls for changing your life. How do you feel on the subject?

How to Finally End Losing Socks When Laundering!

feet with socks.jpeg
This post will finally end the battle of missing socks!

I don’t understand the mysterious connection between washing machines, dryers and socks.  Some mysterious phenomenon must be going on because how many times have you put in pairs of socks only to be missing one once it comes out of the dryer.   Have you ever wondered where those socks go after searching every inch of your dryer and washer and other clothes from that load to see if they attached with no avail?   Well, I finally managed to solve that madness with what I’ve been doing lately.

I originally tried pinning pairs of socks together with safety pins before washing. This is all right most of the time, but I found it can tear socks.  Therefore, I stopped that practice.

Then, I tried using a mesh laundry bag that normally I use for washing delicate pieces. However, instead of taking them out of the bag when it’s time to put them into the dryer, I throw in the entire laundry bag.  The socks stay together this way because I am glad to report no more missing socks have occurred at my house since.

If you want to end missing socks once and for all, try using a mesh laundry bag as I suggested.  This laundry tip is the way to go, readers!

How to Give Your Home a Delicious, Welcoming Fragrance When Vacuuming!

family room.jpeg
You'll love that delicious bakery aroma that will linger in your carpeting.

What can be more inviting than the scent of something delicious baking in your oven like apple pie when it wafts through the house?  Imagine treating your senses to that aroma as you run your vacuum cleaner over your carpeting as its scent permeates through the air. Therefore, let you share a cleaning tip that will help you turn the drudgery of vacuuming into something that will be more of a joy for you and your home.

What I suggest that you need to try is buying a bottle of cinnamon oil to add a drop or two to your vacuum cleaner’s bag.  This will infuse the carpeting with such a yummy  cinnamon aroma that will linger.
vacuum cleaner image.jpeg
Vacuuming can be more pleasant using this tip.

You might be confused because there are two types with the cinnamon leaf oil and the cinnamon bark oil. The bark version is more expensive and the most potent one due to its heavy cinnamaldehyde content (the substance that gives it that characteristic cinnamon scent) with nearly 75% compared to the leaf variety that may be just a fraction of cinnamaldehyde with about 10%.

The cheaper cinnamon leaf oil typically sells for around $6 while the bark oil version runs about $22.

The cinnamon bark oil is the one that you might want to try if you have a lot of problems with muscle aches and pains with how it can heat the sore area up and relieve inflammation.   However, never apply it directly without mixing it with a carrier oil first or you risk developing a severe allergy.

Also, a drop of cinnamon bark oil in a beverage like tea or juice is said to also aid the immune system, fight off viruses and even help circulation.  I do advise checking with your physician first to see if this would be a benefit for you or possibly conflict with any medications that you may be on.

The next time you shop, I hope you remember to look out for cinnamon oil because it really freshens your rooms with a lasting bakery scent that you’ll love.

How to Better Conquer Clutter Before It Takes Over Your Life!

frustrated woman.jpeg
This beauty could use less stress and these tips can help.

Accumulating things is so easy to do.  I know first hand being a blogger.  Before you realize it, our stuff can begin to take over our homes.  If you want to maintain your sanity, then you need a plan to tackle the problem with a few tips to better organize and end the chaos.

Every week, I like to begin sorting through newspapers, correspondence, magazines, and circulars instead of allowing these to pile up.  Paper stuff can be your worst enemy because it can quickly accumulate if you don’t get a handle on it right away.

How to Better Tackle Hard Water Stains in Your Toilet Bowl!

bathroom.jpeg
If you live in an area with hard water, you got to try this cleaning tip because it does work!

In my opinion, cleaning the bathroom is the worst job that I can think of.  I hate the smell of those strong, nauseating disinfectants when you have to scrub the tiles, tub and sink.  Still, there is something even more disgusting and we all know what that involves–cleaning the toilet bowl!

Despite how often I clean that toilet and all the Sani-flush, bleach, and other various cleaners that I have dumped into that porcelain bowl, some stain is always left because of how hard our water is here. Regardless of how vigorously I scrub with my toilet brush or change products, I always feel defeated because some degree of that stain wins.

An Easier Way to Clean Your Hair Brushes and Combs!

Hair brush.jpeg
You will be surprised at how well this simple recipe cleans brushes and combs.

The next time you plan on cleaning your hair brushes and combs, I have a wonderful shortcut that you should try for a better way to clean and disinfect them.

Soak your stying tools in a container with two tablespoons of baking soda, one tablespoon of mouthwash and a tablespoon of dish detergent to enough warm water to cover them.

You will like how much better this simple trick will deep clean and reduce the amount of time you need to soak them.

Later, you just rinse those tools off with water.

I hope you try it because it does work very nicely!

A Dentist Recommended Solution for Cleaning Your Dog’s Teeth!

angry dog showing teeth.jpeg
This guy doesn't want that doggie toothpaste shoved in his mouth judging by his expression.  Why would he when he has a tastier option for cleaning?

Yesterday it was time again to go to the dentist.  This time, however, it was nothing scary but a routine cleaning.  While I was there, I learned something from the dental hygienist that I thought you might be interested in learning.

The hygienist told me how my dentist regularly buys bagels for everyone at the office.  When there are leftover bagels, he takes them home and cuts them into small bite size pieces, wraps them up and freezes them for his dog.  Instead of giving his dog one of those commercial chew bones, he just reaches into the freezer and gives the animal a piece of frozen bagel.  This is what he says works better to clean his dog’s teeth than what he was buying for the same purpose.

The hygienist told me everyone at the practice that has a dog was supplied with bagels for their dog courtesy of my nice dentist.  In fact, she said those with dogs thought the frozen bagel method gave them cleaner looking teeth as well.

If you have a dog, I hope you try this sometime on your animal and let me know what you think.

Dial Miracle Oil Hand Soap Review

Disclaimer: This post is based on a free product provided by a company as a press sample so that I may offer my own opinion, which may be the same or differ from yours.
Dial Miracle Oil Hand Soap.jpeg
Dial Miracle Oil Hand Soap

Dial has done it again!  They have come up with another amazing marula oil-based product with their new Miracle Oil Hand Soap. I was happy when I heard that news since I loved how deeply hydrating that ingredient was after discovering it in their Dial Miracle Oil Body Wash.  Therefore, there was no hesitation on my part and I immediately signed up as a Purex Insider to review this new addition to their liquid soap family.

My hands are quite sensitive and become irritated easily, but this formula was gentle and surprisingly more moisturizing than a typical liquid soap.  This is really important to me, especially with all the times you wash your hands throughout the day.

Anyone searching for more from their usual liquid conditioning soap, I do suggest trying this one.  I do think that marula oil helps better lubricate the hands.  Do try this new Dial Miracle Oil Hand Soap when you shop and see if you also find that additional moisture as wonderful as I did.

Purex PowerShot Liquid Detergent.jpeg
Purex Powershot Liquid Detergent

When I heard, Purex came up with a bottle that made measuring liquid detergent foolproof, I thought it was a brilliant idea. Now you don’t have to guess anymore of how much you poured into one of caps thanks to PowerShot.

Because with PowerShot all that called for is flipping the bottle upside down and it fills up with exactly the amount of detergent needed for a regular load.  Turn the bottle around to its upright position and you can start again. A large load you simply repeat the process twice and you are good to go. I can’t think of anything more simple, convenient and less messy than this.

Purex PowerShot's no-spill bottle!
I just love this bottle especially if you have a hard time seeing, then I guarantee you will be a fan as well.

As to the PowerShot liquid detergent itself, my Mountain Breeze scented formula left that airy freshness lingering in the load I washed and cleaned the clothes beautifully in the process.  It will also come in the Natural Elements Linen & Lilies scent as well when it appears on store shelves in February, which I intend to try next.

I honestly buy Purex products because they do a great job on laundry and save you money at the time.  You do seem to use less than powdered detergents that I used in the past before discovering the brand.  If you haven't found Purex yet, then might want to start with PowerShot that will be here soon!

In the meantime, the company is having a great sweepstakes to launch PowerShot in style.  Three lucky grand prize winners have a chance to win a washer and dryer.  Another 300 will win a coupon for a free bottle of PowerShot.

Just by entering the sweepstakes, the company will email you a $1.00 coupon off your purchase. Even if you don't win, you still can come out ahead.

How to Care for Leather Boots and Shoes After Walking Through Snow and Salt!

tall boots.jpeg
Give your boots some tender loving care and they will stay beautiful longer!

This winter weather can hurt our skin but also can extend to our leather boots and shoes.  If you were wondering how to clean those white spots left behind on your boots and shoes after walking through the snow and salt, then here’s how to quickly clean them.

Take a soft, clean cloth and wipe your boots or shoes with white vinegar.  Within seconds, the white residue will be gone without harming the leather.

Black scuff marks, on the other hand, call for a different solution.  My suggestion is dunking a soft cloth in water, then some baking soda or you can make a paste.  As gently as possible, you rub the mark and it should lift.  Clean your work with another clean, damp cloth and dry.

Another thing I want to pass on to help wet boots keep their shape is by stuffing the inside with rolled up newspaper while you let them dry.  This helps minimize the leather wrinkling, especially for those buttery soft leathers.

Also, make sure never to dry those wet boots or shoes near the radiator or heating duct.  This can have damaging effects like causing the leather to crack or you might shrink the skin.

Further protect the leather with a waterproofing product.  Some of the commercial ones that I tried, I wasn’t thrilled with the results.  What I recommend that does a wonderful job and is safe for leather is a bit of floor wax to waterproof or some petroleum jelly, which also is a great leather conditioner to keep the grain from drying out.

Winter is long and brutal, but these few tips can safeguard your leather investment!

Wisk Deep Clean Laundry Detergent Review

Wisk Deep Clean Laundry Detergent.jpeg
Whisk Deep Clean Laundry Detergent

Now that the holidays and all those calorie-laden foods are behind us then you may have put on a few extra pounds.  If that’s the case, you’ll be hitting the gym more to get your body back and dealing with some foul smelling workout clothes to launder.

Did you know that your workout clothes after a vigorous hour exercise can contain about 27.4 to 47.3 oz. of sweat? Just as disgusting is that sweat can be locked into the fibers of those clothes along with the grime, but Wisk Deep Clean Laundry Detergent that I was asked to review was formulated to penetrate deep into the fabric to better solve that problem.

I never used this liquid detergent before it did a nice job of cleaning and removing odor without costing very much. Wisk Deep Clean kept the color in as well and worked in both hot and cold water with the same results, which I liked.

Have you tried Wisk Deep Clean?  Do check it out.

Purex UltraPacks Plus Oxi.jpeg
Purex UltraPacks Plus Oxi

When I learned that Purex had another new laundry detergent on the market, I looked forward to seeing how their Purex Ultra Packs plus Oxi compared to their other laundry detergents.  Therefore, I signed up to review the product to test drive on our laundry.

Purex Ultra Packs plus Oxi are so convenient and mess free.  Each pack is already measured with liquid laundry detergent so you can spend less time measuring out detergent.  In fact, you will less spend time in your laundry room in general once you throw one of those packs into your machine because this is powerful stain fighting action at work with their concentrated DirtLift action formula.

This product is formulated for all machines, including high-efficiency models.  Each pack does one full load and dissolves almost instantly, releasing a pleasant fragrance.  This nice scent came in handy especially with the load of offensive workout clothes that I tossed in the sudsy bubbles.

To tell the truth, I couldn't believe how well these detergent capsules worked when I examined those clothes later.  Despite that these weren't new pieces, this ultrapack seemed to give the clothes some new life as well as brighten.  The items also were infused with that clean, fresh fragrance I noticed when putting them away.

You really should try this Purex UltraPacks Plus Oxi the next time you run out of your regular brand.  Visit their site for more information about this detergent.  What do you have to lose--except dirt and stains?

To accompany this product's launch, Purex is hosting another exciting sweepstakes where ten winners will win $50 in the Find the Red Jersey and Win Sweepstakes.  Once you click that link and please use mine, you will be redirected to Purex's website where you will hunt for a red football jersey for your chance to win.  Here's a hint:  Just toss and go!  Now go get some money!

Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care Review + Brighter Bowl Sweepstakes

**Disclaimer:  This post has been compensated through a free product (s) or monetary payment.  Opinions are solely mine. All links are "no-follow" links.**
Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care.jpeg
Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care

I doubt any of us like cleaning toilets.  If a toilet care product can make such a gross task as easy and efficient as possible, I am definitely onboard with trying it.  Therefore, I was glad to see the Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care products from Purex sent to me for this review.

Nothing could be simpler.  All I had to do was to slip the product over the rim of the toilet bowl and let this little gizmo do its freshening, cleaning, and sanitizing thing.  This device could reliably grip due to its plastic cage unlike some other dangling types I have used in the past.  Each flush powers it into action, which is advertised to last up to four weeks.

You don't need to wave that magic wand of your toilet brush as often with a toilet bowl cleaner when using this product.  This Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care kept the bowl cleaner than I expected.   The Alpine Fresh fragrance comes with bleach and the Sapphire Waters is the other scent that is sold without bleach.  Both varieties run less than $2.00 and are available at Walmart.

Try it yourself at home and compare your current product to this.  My guess is Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care will be the winner.

Listen up because is more good news from Soft Scrub with their Brighter Bowl Sweepstakes.  You can win $1,000 or one of 250 free product coupons for a package of Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care.  Enter now through my link and with any luck, we both hopefully will be lucky and win something.

Review: A Beautiful Cleaner! NEW Soft Scrub Advanced Surface

**Disclaimer:  This post has been compensated through a free product (s) or monetary payment.  Opinions are solely mine. All links are "no-follow" links.**

Soft Scrub Advanced Surface.jpeg
Soft Scrub Advanced Surface

If a cleaning product can perform better than my old standby, then I definitely think it deserves a try.  After all, I can think of lots of other things I would rather be doing than slaving over housework.  Therefore, I was happy to receive my bottle of NEW Soft Scrub Advanced Surface when it arrived for my review.

This a rinse-free gel that  you can use  to clean granite and marble countertops, glass cooktops, and stainless steel without worry of harming them.  You just apply, scrub, and wipe it away without rinsing.

My first thought was the kitchen.  I have a stainless steel cooktop range and oven that I was thought was a good place to start.  All I did was squeeze a little of the gel out and started scrubbing.  Later, I just wiped the product off and it seemed to buff up the shine and catch a bit of grease imbedded along the ridges of the knobs.

Pleased with what was in front of me, I grabbed another clean cloth and applied some to the oven.  When I finished working and wiped it away, I thought it did a nice job in cleaning because my cloth had more grime than my typical cleaner ever picked up.

I also have a stainless steel sink that I worked on next.  When I was thorough, I thought it gleamed more than usual as well.

What I really liked was how tough it was on grime while being a gentle stainless steel cleaner and polishing those surfaces with new luster.  Although it won't remove every last trace, it does work especially well for cleaning those tight spaces.

I suggest picking up a bottle of NEW Soft Scrub Advanced Surface and put it to the test yourself!

Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleanser Review + Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Sweepstakes!

Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleanser.jpeg
Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleanser

The less time that I need to waste cleaning bathrooms with soap scum, mold, and disinfecting, the happier I am since it is my least favorite room to tackle.  Some products you need to use have such strong fumes that before you finish you're practically intoxicated or less intrusive ones often don't perform.  Therefore, I was curious to see how well the Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleaner worked that I received to review as a Purex Insider.

To my delight, this improved formula of the cleaner is advertised to have more whitening power plus less residue than the old version.  This already sounded good to me, especially once I discovered that lively lemon scent, which managed to put me in a better mood.  Armed with carrying case of cleaning supplies, I took out my gloves and started.

By the time I was thorough, I had my bathroom back  and it smelled fresh with this lemon cleanser instead of chemicals.  The tiles  in my shower were gleaming again and free of soap scum after I worked.   Even the grout appeared a bit brighter from this formula.  The soap film in the sink from everyone's rush to get out of the house on time no longer was an issue because this wiped away that negligent mess easily.  What I thought was wonderful was I didn't have to keep rinsing as much as I normally do with some cleansers.

I didn't test this all purpose cleanser in my kitchen yet.  That will be next on my list.  However, I do think this new formula does seem to do make an unpleasant task like bathroom detail easier.

I do suggest trying Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleaner for yourself!

For fun, do enter the Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Sweepstakes for a chance at winning $1,000 and a year's supply of Soft Scrub Total All Purpose for the grand prize winner.  Another 250 will win a free bottle of Soft Scrub Total All Purpose.  Please enter through my link and, perhaps, we both can win.
